Apollo Hospital's liver transplant specialist will now provide consultations in Kanpur

Kanpur :  Marking a significant milestone in Uttar Pradesh’s healthcare services, Apollomedics Super Specialty Hospital, will now offer expert consultations for liver-related diseases and liver transplants at Gastro Liver Hospital, Kanpur.

This special OPD will be led by *Dr. Abhishek Yadav, Senior Director and Head of Department, Liver Transplant & HPB Surgery, Apollo Hospital. Dr. Yadav will be available for patients on the **third Wednesday of every month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.* at The Gastro Liver Hospital.

Launching this OPD, Dr. Abhishek Yadav told the media, “Every year in India, about 2.5 to 3 lakh people lose their lives due to liver diseases and liver cirrhosis. Liver disease has now become the 8th most common cause of death in India, while ten years ago it ranked 10th. Only about 2,500–3,000 liver transplants are performed annually in the country — just 1–2% of the actual need. Fatty liver disease is rising rapidly and affects 30–35% of India’s population, reaching as high as 50% in some regions.

In Uttar Pradesh, which accounts for nearly 17% of India’s population, around 50,000–60,000 people die every year due to liver diseases, but only about 200–250 liver transplants are performed annually — most of them in the NCR region. The entire state has only four liver transplant centers, compared to 42 in Tamil Nadu, 36 in Maharashtra, 35 in Delhi NCR, 25 in Karnataka, and 19 in Kerala. As a result, most patients are forced to travel to other states, increasing treatment costs and making post-transplant follow-ups difficult.

At Apollo Hospital Lucknow, we perform liver transplants not only for adults but also for children and newborns. This initiative by Apollomedics Super Specialty Hospital and The Gastro Liver Hospital will strengthen access to advanced liver healthcare in Kanpur and nearby regions, offering patients world-class care right in their own city.”

Speaking to the media, *Dr. V.K. Mishra*, Chairman and Senior Gastroenterologist of The Gastro Liver Hospital, said, “Thanks to advancements in medical science, the success rate of liver transplants has now reached 95% to 97%, proving that this surgery is both safe and effective. With timely decisions and modern technology, patients with liver failure are getting a new lease on life. The objective of this OPD is to provide the people of Kanpur with high-quality liver care consultation within their own city. Through this initiative, patients will have direct access to expert care and advanced technology via the Apollo Liver Clinic in Kanpur.”

*Dr. Mayank Somani*, MD and CEO, emphasized the importance of the upcoming expressway between Lucknow and Kanpur and improved connectivity. He said, “Better connectivity between Lucknow and Kanpur will bring huge relief to patients. Now, for advanced liver care, patients will no longer need to travel long distances to Delhi or Mumbai. Once the expressway opens, Kanpur patients will be able to reach Lucknow in just 45 minutes — a life-saving advantage in emergencies and highly convenient for post-surgery or post-transplant follow-ups, saving both time and money. Lucknow is rapidly emerging as a medical hub for Uttar Pradesh and neighboring states. This initiative by Apollo Hospital is a step toward improving patients’ quality of life. The presence of our specialists in Kanpur will be a great relief and convenience for local residents.”
