MASSH - PROLIFE Hospital Ludhiana Launches “Obesity-Free Punjab” Campaign

Ludhiana : Are you one of the eight people struggling with obesity? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 2.5 billion people worldwide are dealing with obesity. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted obesity as a serious health threat during his Mann Ki Baat address. The number of people suffering from obesity and its related complications has doubled in recent years. What’s more alarming is that obesity and related diseases among children have increased by four times.

In an effort to make Punjab a healthier state and tackle this growing crisis, MASSH - PROLIFE Hospital Ludhiana has launched a major campaign against obesity.

Once known for its athletic excellence and wholesome diets, Punjab is now witnessing an alarming rise in obesity and lifestyle-related diseases.

According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), 30.2% of men in Punjab aged 15–49 are obese, making it the state with the highest obesity rate in India. The numbers are even more concerning for women — nearly 45% of women in the same age group are overweight or obese. In Ludhiana alone, around 45% of women are overweight, and 80% are suffering from abdominal obesity.

The city also faces a significant burden of other metabolic disorders. Around 30% of men and 29% of women in Ludhiana have high blood sugar levels. Similarly, 32% of men and 27% of women suffer from high blood pressure. Even among children, the problem is growing — nearly 7% of children in Ludhiana are obese, according to NFHS-5 data.

Dr. Harpreet Singh Jolly, Director – Laparoscopic & Bariatric Surgery, MASSH - PROLIFE Hospital, says “Obesity is one of the most pressing health issues of our time, and the data clearly shows that Punjab is at high risk. Our youth, women, and even children are increasingly affected. Poor dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles are major contributors.”

“At MASSH - PROLIFE Hospital, nearly 60 patients every month visit our OPD with obesity-related issues. Many of them suffer from serious complications like sleep apnea, hypertension, joint pain, type 2 diabetes, shortness of breath, depression, low self-esteem, sexual dysfunction, infertility, PCOD (in women), kidney problems, fatty liver, NASH (Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis), and varicose veins. Obesity is also linked to certain types of cancer. In short, obesity is at the root of many diseases.”

“The statistics are especially worrying for women in Ludhiana. To fight this epidemic, we must transform both our eating habits and lifestyle. With this goal in mind, we have launched the ‘Obesity-Free Punjab’ campaign.”

Dr. Jolly further explained, “Regular exercise, yoga, a balanced diet, and a disciplined lifestyle are essential in managing obesity. However, if obesity continues to severely impact a person’s health, bariatric surgery can be a safe and effective solution.”

To raise awareness and offer solutions, MASSH - PROLIFE Hospital has launched a 6-month statewide campaign, ‘Obesity-Free Punjab’, which will educate people across Ludhiana and other districts about the growing threat of obesity and the steps they can take to overcome it. As part of the campaign, MASSH - PROLIFE Hospital has also committed to supporting economically weaker patients by offering upto 25% concession on treatment packages, making advanced obesity care more accessible and inclusive.

MASSH Group of Hospitals has become a symbol of trust with its advanced and specialized healthcare services in South Delhi, Noida, and Ludhiana.
