Obesity Clinic Launched to Tackle Growing Child and Adult Diabetes Cases
Noida : Diabetes is no longer limited to the elderly — it is rapidly increasing among the youth as well. On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, doctors at Yatharth Hospital, Noida, shared that every fifth patient visiting the OPD is suffering from diabetes. The main contributing factors, they said, are unhealthy eating habits and stress.
Dr. Manju Tyagi, Senior Consultant and Head, Department of Internal Medicine, Yatharth Hospital, Noida said that there has been a noticeable surge in diabetes cases after COVID. She added, “Post-COVID, many young individuals have been found with elevated blood sugar levels. The infection impacted the body’s immune system and the pancreas. Along with that, stress, poor diet, and lack of proper sleep are becoming major causes.”
Dr. Prakhar Garg, Principal Consultant, Internal Medicine, shared that around 25–26% of people in the Delhi-NCR region are affected by diabetes. He said, “New cases are now being seen even among young adults and working women. Regular blood sugar tests and timely health checkups can help detect the disease early and keep it under control.”
Dr. Ashish Gupta, Consultant, Endocrinology, highlighted that obesity and excessive screen time have become major challenges. He said, “Spending long hours on mobile phones or computers reduces physical activity, leads to poor eating habits, and causes weight gain — which eventually increases the risk of diabetes.”
Dr. Potluri Chetan, Consultant – Paediatrics, said “Childhood obesity has become one of the biggest contributors to early-onset diabetes. We are seeing more children with unhealthy weight gain, largely due to poor diet choices, limited outdoor activity, and excessive screen time. Parents need to encourage physical play, limit gadget time, and promote balanced meals to help prevent lifestyle-related diabetes from setting in at an early age.”
Doctors also shared that 10–14% of pregnant women are being diagnosed with diabetes. Uncontrolled blood sugar levels can affect the baby’s health and increase the risk of preterm delivery. Among children, about 1% are diabetic and 15% are pre-diabetic.
Dr. Prakhar Garg added, “If diabetes is detected early and lifestyle changes are made in time, the need for medication can be reduced. A balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep are the best forms of treatment.”
Dr. Manju Tyagi, added “With the rise in lifestyle disorders, we have launched a dedicated Obesity Clinic at Yatharth Hospital Noida 110 unit to provide comprehensive evaluation, counselling, and treatment. Our goal is to help individuals manage weight effectively, reduce diabetes risk, and adopt sustainable lifestyle changes for long-term health.
Dr. Gowthami A.V., CEO, Yatharth Hospital, Noida 110, said, “At Yatharth Hospital, we are deeply committed to raising awareness about diabetes and its growing impact on younger generations. Our focus is not only on treatment but also on prevention through timely health checkups, counselling, and lifestyle education. By promoting early detection and healthy habits, we aim to help families take control of diabetes before it becomes a lifelong burden.”
The hospital experts urged people to get their blood sugar tested regularly, especially if there is a family history of diabetes, and to never ignore the symptoms.
